With GENO Bioenergie 1, Doric Asset Finance offered the opportunity to invest in the bioenergy park "Klarsee".
The Bioenergy Park
The Bioenergy Park Klarsee consists of a group of 40 independent biogas plants which produce electricity and thermal energy from renewable materials (crops bred specifically for use in biogas production and crop residues). The cumulated electrical output is approx. 20 MW. When running at full capacity the plant is able to fill the annual electricity needs of 40,000 households.
The park's location near Penkun in eastern Germany is ideal: It is surrounded by farmland which can supply the plants with the required silage. These renewable materials can be sourced from farms in both Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and adjacent Poland. In addition, the park is conveniently situated next to the A 11 Berlin-to-Stettin motorway and not far from the A 20 motorway.
Biogas is produced in the individual units using natural fermenting processes. Biomass is heated to temperatures of between 32°C and 42°C in special containers called fermenters. Precise amounts of microorganisms are added so that the cycle of biogas production is completed within 40 to 70 days.
The Concept
The bioenergy park has been designed for efficiency. By distributing production amongst 40 separate, independently functioning plants, the consistent production of electricity is assured. The park's operator, a subsidiary of NAWARO BioEnergie AG, employs a well-trained team which ensures that the plant runs at optimal capacity. Centralised controls and monitoring, technical safety features, demand-orientated stocks of biomass and logistics are all integral to the concept.
Current Situation
Since the German government has clarified the legal situation for biogas plants built before 1st January 2009, the park's operator is starting up the fermenters which had had to be temporarily run down. 32 of the park's 40 plants have been running at full capacity since the first quarter of 2010.
In the mean time, first distributions to investors in the bioenergy park have been paid.
