DORIC GREEN POWER - GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR BIOGAS PLANT HEILIGENGRABE
London/Offenbach/Heiligengrabe – The official groundbreaking ceremony for the biogas plant in Heiligengrabe took place on March 17th, 2009. The ceremony was attended by a number of farmers, representatives of Heiligengrabe community and of the district Ostprignitz-Ruppin, representatives of the Environmental Agency for Brandenburg and all parties involved in the project.
Karsten Ferner, plant manager of Kerry Ingredients, which will source heat from the biogas plant, praised the project as forward-looking. Thanks to the biogas plant Kerry Ingredients alone will be able to reduce its annual output of CO2 by 2000 tonnes whilst also securing the economic future of the area: Kerry has already made the decision to expand its plant in Heiligengrabe.
The biogas plant is a new source of income for local farmers. Three permanent jobs will be created at the biogas plant and further jobs with suppliers and service providers will be preserved.
The environmental impact of the biogas plant will be very respectable: From the autumn of 2009 the plant will supply green electricity to 3000 households. Roughly 2/3 of the feedstock for the plant will come from liquid and solid manures whilst the digestate will be used to fertilize local fields, thus minimizing the need for artificial fertilizers. In keeping with the green concept for the biogas plant, the groundbreaking ceremony did not actually involve breaking ground. Instead a tree was planted by the project developer, general contractor and partnership.
In spite of the current financial crisis, the Doric Green Power fund’s numerous investors are making a valuable contribution to both the environment and the economy.
